Over a year ago, we launched our Community Ambassador programme. Our new Ambassadors are doing a great job supporting the Inherited Metabolic Disorders community in their local areas, enabling us to reach many more patients and families, and helping us spread the word by raising awareness and fundraising. Today, meet our Ambassador, Abbie Thompson.
“Hi, I’m Abbie and I live in Somerset with my partner, Harry. I have a beautiful daughter, Florence, who is 17 months and has MCADD.
I adore my family, love exercising, and spending time with my friends. Florence keeps me extremely busy and I love spending time with her, doing new things and exploring new places.
I run a lot and have completed six half marathons – maybe one day I will complete a full one!”
Why did you want to become a Community Ambassador for Metabolic Support UK?
I wanted to become an Ambassador because I never want people to feel like they’re alone, especially newly diagnosed families. I want to support as many people as possible and to bring us all together as a team.
How are you planning to raise awareness of the services that Metabolic Support UK provide?
I am planning to build a platform for families within the South West and to hopefully have regular coffee mornings for us to all come together. I will also be organising several fundraising events in which I will talk about Metabolic Support UK and the amazing role that they play in supporting families.
Where is the strangest place that you’ve raised awareness of Inherited Metabolic Disorders?
Whilst having drinks with my friends in Bristol, I ended up having a conversation with a family on the opposite table about MCADD.
What’s the hardest thing about living with someone with an Inherited Metabolic Disorder?
I think that it has to be the constant worry, including worrying about keeping her well and monitoring her eating and drinking.
Who in the Metabolic community has had the greatest impact upon you?
I lady called Jill, who actually lives in America. Her daughter also has MCADD and has been supporting me since day one. I can go to her for support at any time and she always makes me feel more relaxed.
What’s in your fridge?
Lots of fruit and vegetables. I mainly lead a healthy lifestyle (minus the wine!).
What’s your favourite comfort food?
I love biscuits, especially dunked in tea.
Strictly Come Dancing, I’m a Celebrity or Great British Bake Off?
A no brainer for me, I’m a Celeb is my favourite!
What was the last film you watched?
The new Lion King. I loved it as much as the first!
Caribbean beach or snow top mountains?
As much as I love a physical challenge, I would have to say Caribbean beach!
What would be a good theme song for your life?
“Who runs the world, girls” by Beyonce.
Who do you follow on Twitter?
I’m not on the Twitter band waggon.
If you were given an extra hour today, how would you spend it?
It should be sleeping but would most probably end up being exercising or catching up with the girls.
