With two months to go until the London Marathon, our 17 fantastic Team Climb gold bond holders are busy planning their training and fundraising activities. Melvyn has agreed to share his training journey as he prepares for the big day on 22nd April 2018, follow his story here!
Eight weeks away from the start line of the Virgin London Marathon 2018 for Climb and I’m not where I want to be in my training plan. This is due to a slight hamstring injury – I don’t really know what’s the problem. I t just feels a tight after about 4 miles of running and that is going to be a worry when you’ve got another 22.6 to go!
I’ve tried resting the legs a little bit to see if it will just ‘fix’ itself – but that hasn’t been very successful…. So I’ve had to re-join the gym to do some exercises that will strengthen the leg. I’m not overly concerned at this point, but I might have to revise my expected time. I was hoping to make the good for age time in London, which in my age category means running under 3 hours 15 minutes. This would mean that I could enter the London Marathon in future years and be guaranteed a place!
Even given the above I have been able to get out and run and put some good training together. January started with on the 1st with a 4 mile run along Plymouth Hoe and despite a small hangover from the New Year festivities the night before – I really enjoyed the bright afternoon sunshine and the training had started!
On January 13th I hopped on the ferry to Cornwall and ran the spectacularly tough Mount Edgcumbe Parkrun. It was their 100th celebratory race and I managed to finish 11th of the 66 runners. Parkrun’s are 5k races run for free by volunteers under the guidance of http://www.parkrun.org.uk/ and it happens that the one at Mount Edgcumbe is ranked as the 3rd most tough out of the 472 organised races in the UK. My hometown of Crewe has just started on its Parkrun journey and I would encourage everyone to check out their local run – it’s free, friendly and suits all abilities.
At the end of January, I returned to Crewe for a weekend and despite it not being for the best of reasons, I managed to get a decent training run in over the half marathon distance of 13.1 miles and I took in the refurbished Queens Park.
Into February and I’ve started to feel more confident and I have some long runs planned on Sundays – I’m hoping to run along the South West Coast Path a bit as the terrain is easier on the legs and the sea views amazing!
On the 17th February I ran the Tavistock 5KooL RuN which starts and ends on their athletics track. I managed a sub 20 minute 5k and finished in 8th of the 73 runners.
