Sunday 22nd April 2018 saw the 38th London Marathon take place. Around 41,000 runners took to London’s streets to complete the 26.2 mile course of the world’s most iconic Marathon! And 15 of those fantastic runners made up Team Climb! Despite the race being the hottest in London Marathon history (at 24 degree heat!), our runners did us proud and all completed the race!
The starting bell for the London Marathon runners sounded at 10am. From then on, runners filled the streets of London! From first time Marathon runners to running pros, a whole variety of people had laced up their running shoes and invested in all the right gear, to try and get to the finish line!
Amongst the runners, there were many people keen to break new Guinness World Records, by wearing a wacky outfit whilst running! One person attempting to break a Guinness World Record was the sister of one of our gold bond holders, who dressed as a horse called Hercules, complete with a Climb vest! To say it would have been hot wearing that suit would be an understatement! Regardless, Hercules, and all of Team Climb finished the race, and we are amazed and humbled by the level of commitment they showed to supporting us!
Another one of our runners, Anita Brady, also had the chance to complete the race alongside a Guinness World Record runner. This runner was dressed up as Mr Potato Head – there were certainly plenty of fun outfits to be seen at the Marathon!
All the action was aired on the BBC, and I’ve no doubt there were many homes across the country willing on Team Climb. We certainly know the homes of Climb HQ were! Three of our runners, Jess, Kayleigh and Dan, who were running in memory of Jess’s son Ethan, also got a mention on TV. Jess was running her third London Marathon. Despite this, it was clear the race had not been easy, as Jess herself said,
We were a lot slower than expected, we are in pain, we are mentally and physically drained, it was hot, they ran out of water bottles! And we stopped a few times for a wee!!
But we did it, we did it for Climb and Ethan and I hope he’s proud of us all. We even got a shout out on the TV!! Although we didn’t get the time we wanted we did it and we got that medal and we now wear it with pride!” Jessica Allamby, 2018 London Marathon Runner.
Our fastest runner was Geraldine Bhattacharya from Sydney (Australia), who completed the race in an amazing 3 hours and 52 minutes! An incredible effort!
Maggie, Paul and Andrea from Climb HQ attended the London Marathon, and from start to finish, were madly cheering our runners on the final stretch of the race. Seeing our runners clad in their Climb vests and pushing onto the finish line was inspirational. We are so proud of them all, and especially considering the conditions on the day. We know it must have been a huge challenge, as one our runners, Emily, made clear.
“Well it’s done….. first half a breeze but after mile 15 the mechanics started to fall apart and I had 3 lots of physio to get to the finish …… but I did it.” Emily Cullum, 2018 London Marathon Runner.
To all our Team Climb 2018 runners, Nathan, Gerry, Glenn, Jess, Kayleigh, Anita, Dan, Emily, Katie and Team Hercules, Rachel, Melvyn, Phil, Nicky, Mark and Julian…a HUGE thank you! We really appreciate all you do to support us, and your amazing fundraising efforts. We hope you’re now all getting some well earned rest and are recovering well!
