Chantelle Leanne O’Brien

Chantelle Leanne O’Brien

As a memorial to our beautiful daughter, Chantelle, we would like to pay tribute via a Galaxy
Tribute Fund.
Chant was amongst five brothers and was always the boss. As she grew out of many childhood
illnesses, she enjoyed dancing, starting with ballet and tap and then eventually all kinds of
dancing. She always said she wanted to be famous as a singer and dancer. She also joined a
drama group and her confidence grew with them. Chantelle was very shy with a lot of people
and the drama was very helpful.
Chant’s beauty and vibrancy touched many people as she grew up. She worked part-time at
her local Co-op; attended college; and found a new placement at a nursery, where she hoped
her future job lay. Chant’s boyfriend of eleven months, Shaun, was backing her 100% and they
were beginning to plan a future together when Chant fell ill.
She was vomiting on the Monday night and saw the head nurse at the doctors on Tuesday
when we were told it was a viral infection. After continuous phone calls saying she wasn’t
much better, we were told viruses can last longer than 24 hours. Chant did say she felt
a little better on Thursday and didn’t want to go to the emergency doctors. But on wakening
her on Friday, we decided that hospitalisation was needed. The doctors found she had
pneumonia and she had constant drips of glucose, saline and antibiotics and blood tests. On
Sunday night, they decided to send her to intensive care but on Monday morning, 3 March
2008, she lost her fight for life.
She was seventeen years old; all we have are our precious memories. It is all so unbelievable
because she loved life and had so much to offer. We finally found out that we lost Chant to
MCADD and that’s how we found out about Climb. We would like to help others and make
more people aware of metabolic diseases, as we were totally in the dark. Since our tragic loss,
we need to keep Chantelle’s beautiful memory alive and I know she would be proud we are
helping children because it was her choice of career.
